Magpie Creative Reuse Collective offers classes and events focused on inspiring reuse. We teach skills, and encourage creative thinking, to transform materials through reuse, upcycling, downcycling, recycling and repair.

Spring at MCPL – Junk Bots

Make your own unique junk-bot using recycled materials. We’ll use hand tools and hot glue guns to transform bits of leftover wood, metal, and plastic into something creative. How will you make screws, nuts, corks, and wires into a quirky little friend? Please register participating children only. Free!

Time: Multiple Days – Starting March 3

Spring at MCPL – Beginner Crochet

Learn the basic chain stitch used in crochet. We’ll use the chain stitch with yarn and beads to make a colorful necklace or wrap bracelets. Free!

Spring at MCPL – Mini Flower Press

Whether you’re a naturalist, a scrapbooker, or just want to preserve memories, a flower press is great for preserving your favorite blooms. Join the Magpie Creative Reuse Collective to create and decorate your own mini flower press. Free!

3/29 Intro to Junk Journals

Join artist Gina Johnson from @stellarjstudios for an introduction into the wonderful world of junk journals. Each participant will create a one-of-a-kind junk journal using repurposed materials. The journal will be a single signature with a no-stitch ribbon binding method.

3/29 Spring Egg Carton Critters

An all ages craft day with reuse materials! Angela Borns will show you how to turn egg cartons into all your favorite spring time friends. Options for many levels of makers.

Time: 2pm – 4pm

4/11 DIY Moth Wings

Join fiber artist Heather Anacker and learn how to make your own pair of moth wings using up-cycled materials. We’ll use wire, fabric scraps, and a bit of magic to transform them into a costume piece fit for a ball!

4/12 Trash Printmaking: Tetra Pak Etching

Join KCAI printmaking student & Magpie intern, Rem Ye, to explore alternative material printmaking. Rem will show you how to turn Tetra Pak liquid food packaging into an etched plate, ready for printing.

Time: 10:30am – 1:30pm

4/19 Paper Clay Sculpting

Join artist Syd Kindberg for an exploration in creating with discarded paper materials. Learn the basics of papier-mâché, including recipes, techniques for building solid forms, and tips for painting on paper clay.

4/26 Mending Circle – Heather Anacker

Bring your own mending projects for an open mending meetup. Space and time to care for your things. No instruction provided.

5/3 ¡Vamos al mundial! Teje una donita para el cabello.

¡Kansas City se está preparando para festejar el mundial este verano! ¿Estas listo(a) para representar a tu equipo? Alza tu bandera en esta clase de crochet, donde aprenderás a tejer una donita para el cabello (scrunchie) con los colores de tu equipo.

5/7 Junk Journaling Junkies KC

Join artist Gina Johnson from @stellarjstudios for a monthly junk journal meetup. Includes space and collaboration, access to quirky and unique creative reuse materials, as well as a carefully curated Junk Stash bundle.  Each bundle is loosely based on a theme and will include a variety of papers, fabrics, stationery, and stickers that have been ‘found’ in the wild.

Time: 5:30-7:30pm

5/17 Mending with Heather

Learn to mend your clothes! Join sewist Heather Anacker to practice the basics of mending.
