Magpie Creative Reuse Collective offers classes and events focused on inspiring reuse. We teach skills, and encourage creative thinking, to transform materials through reuse, upcycling, downcycling, recycling and repair.

Summer at MCPL – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle-asauros
Grab reusable items from the recycle bin to make cardboard dinos. Learn to print scales with used bubble wrap and cut paper tubes into stands. All materials will be provided – Free!

Summer at MCPL – Flying Pterodactyl Puppet
Take to the prehistoric skies with a flapping pterodactyl. All materials will be provided. Please register participating children only. Free!

Summer at MCPL – Stickers For Sports Fans
Create your own stickers to support your favorite team with Magpie Creative Reuse. We’ll learn how to upcycle leftover office supplies and use simple relief printing techniques to make DIY stickers. Free!

6/25 Golden Hour Summer Stitch Club
Guests are invited to bring an individual work-in-progress using found textiles to stitch in community with fellow makers, seek and exchange helpful advice, and enjoy the summer evenings together. Light refreshments provided, or BYOB.
5 Weeks: June 18, June 25, July 2, July 9, & July 16th. Come to one or come to all.

6/28 Mending Circle – Heather Anacker
Bring your own mending projects for an open mending meetup. Space and time to care for your things. No instruction provided.

7/12 Upcycled Pet Bed
Turn unwanted upholstery fabric samples into a stylish pet bed for your fur baby! In this class you’ll select fabrics from our large collection of upholstery samples, patchwork them together, learn how to install a zipper, and use fabric scraps to stuff your finished project. This is a beginner friendly sewing project with Heather Anacker.
Time: 1:00-5:00pm

7/16 Reinventing your Wardrobe Through Patch Printing
Learn to upcycle clothes with custom lino block printing. Janelle Crawford-Hine from Janellebee Studios will show you how to cut and print blocks using lino scraps from her own practice. Print on scrap fabric for patches or directly on used clothing to add new life.

Free meetup for creative folks. Bring your own project and create in community with others.

7/19 Fearless Beginning Sewing
Sewing is not to be feared! In this beginner-friendly class, with instructor Karen Sullivan, you’ll learn the basics of your sewing machine — including machine parts, threading, winding and inserting a bobbin, and creating simple stitches with confidence. We’ll practice stitching techniques before moving on to a fun beginner project: a small pillow style pin cushion.

7/23 Bio-Yarn
Join BioSpoke for a hands-on Bio-Yarn workshop where participants will explore the intersection of sustainable fashion, science, and creativity. Attendees will learn how bio-yarns can be created as an alternative textile material and gain insight into the growing field of biomaterials in fashion.

7/30 Applique Patches – Fruit & Veg
Turn scrap fabric into applique patches for mending tears or adding unique flare. Choose your favorite fruit or veg pattern for a fun mending skill.

8/1 Upcycled Boxy Top
Sully’s Upcycled Box Top is a fun, easy, beginner-friendly sewing pattern with a wide boxy fit, and easy options for a finished neckline. This top is designed to be approachable for beginners—no complicated techniques, just straightforward, joyful sewing.

8/2 Mending Jeans with a Sewing Machine
In this class we’ll learn about patching, machine darning, reinforcing problem areas, zipper replacement and crotch repair. With these techniques you can keep your jeans going for years to come!

8/8 Hitomezashi: “One Stitch” Sashiko
Traditional Japanese hand sewing on a grid. A mindful craft for creatives and math nerds! Learn the history and of traditional Japanese Hitomezashi, along with how a few simple rules of thread-through-fabric can lead to infinite ideas.

8/16 Scraps to Scarabs
In this fabric scraps focused workshop, guests will experiment with 3D form and hand stitching to create their own one of a kind beetle brooch. There couldn’t be a more delightful way to transform materials that would otherwise be considered waste.

9/5 Mish Mash Mobile
Join Tara from Lost and Found Designs to make a doodads and whositwhatsits mobile. Think of yourself as the little mermaid and you have collected your own sparkly thing-a-ma-bob! We will have seashells, tumbled glass and ceramic bits, wood scraps, jewelry beads and baubles. In this workshop you will learn to solder with lead free materials.

9/13 Mending with Heather
Learn to mend your clothes! Join sewist Heather Anacker to practice the basics of mending.

9/20 Beginner Sashiko
Join Dan Miller from Sashiko Dan to learn the fast-stitch art of Sashiko, including history, modern uses, and pattern design while decorating your own patch to continue the tradition of clothing repair and upcycling.

10/3 Sustainable Fabric Brooch
Fabric bits and special stitches become the softest brooches in this hands on workshop with artist Aimee Hagedorn. Guests will play in piles of colorful fabric scraps to design their own signature piece.
